ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

J Thomas (Southern) have always been very environmentally aware and with modern day conerns for the well being of our planet growing all the time we strive to be at the forefront of protecting and preserving the environment.

We have worked with the Environment Agency numerous times and will continue to so in the future. In June 2006 we completed a river rehabilitation project in Epsom Surrey for the EA. The project was aimed at regenerating a rundown and mistreated part of Hogsmill river to create a place where the public could enjoy the surroundings and encourage new and existing wildlife to flourish. The project was a complete success and from the photos to the left the change is there for everyone to see. (Click photos for larger images

RAINWATER HARVESTING

We at J Thomas southern Ltd like to evolve and move with the times so that we can serve our customers in the best way possible. This means being innovative in our approach to business and thinking of new ideas of how the client can best benefit from our expertise.

Our latest venture is the introduction of a rainwater harvesting systems into our traditional pitch drainage schemes.

UPVC Drainage is installed as usual to a field or garden but instead of discharging the drained water into a ditch or soak away we can install an underground storage chamber so the water can be reused.

With the ever increasing awareness of climate change and unpredictable weather patterns, our customers are looking for ways to store water when it’s in abundance for drier times when the school field or garden needs watering therefore eliminating the need for drawing water from the mains, effectively saving for a non-rainy day…

Tanks of varying sizes of between 1500 – 8000 litres can be installed and can also incorporate the run off collected from roofs of buildings to further add to the storage tanks.

Benefits of rainwater harvesting

  • · Saves money by not using mains water
  • · Saves the environment by recycling water
  • · Reduces the load on surface water drains     to help prevent flooding
  • · Overcomes the restriction of any hose pipe ban
  • · Can help educate school children about recycling

INVASIVE PLANTS

An ever increasing problem in the United Kingdom has been the introduction of invasive plant species. Plants such as Giant Hogweed and Japanese knotweed have been able to thrive in our gardens and countryside and are out growing and out-competing our native plant species causing them die out. Their speed of growth, lack of natural predators and regrowth after they appear to have been killed make them a serious concern for gardeners, land owners and the Environment Agency.

We have personnel who are specially trained (industry standard NPTC certification) in the use of knapsack sprayers which use a powerful glyphosate based chemical which is the most cost effective and efficient way of eradicating such plants.

Send us an enquiry if you would like more information and how we can best deal with your troublesome plants.
